Spiritual Explorations - Nourishing Your Body and Soul
Food - Connecting Our Stomachs to Our Souls. Led by Kathy Palokoff, March 18, 2-4 pm at Temple Emanu-El.
Food is a vital part of Jewish tradition. But how does what and how we eat connect to our spirituality? Does how we feel about eating and our bodies affect not only our physical health but our spiritual health? What agreements do we have in place with ourselves around eating? What does Judaism say about food, eating and our bodies? This interactive workshop will explore through conversation, writing and tasting our relationship to food and how we can practice mindfulness and embrace happiness in relationship to our bodies.
Kathy Palokoff is a local entrepreneur who focuses on helping organizations that do good through her women-owned company, CUSTOMERicity. She has spent many years both professionally and personally gaining insights into weight and body-related issues. She is currently working on a memoir entitled, Traveling Fat and a novel called Hope Light.
LivingDance ~ LivingMusic: The Dance Within Us. Led by Danielle Fraenkel and Jeffrey Mehr, May 19, 2-4:30 pm at Camp Eastman in Durand Eastman Park. This event is part of Temple Emanu-El’s annual Shabbat in the Park retreat.
By working with natural elements of dance and movement, we embody vital principles that awaken our creative sensibilities and support the ongoing process of becoming. No previous dance experience or talent required. Dress comfortably.
Danielle L. Fraenkel, Ph.D., BC-DMT, LCMC, LCAT, director of Kinections Dance & Movement Therapy and creator of LivingDance, discovered that dance was more than recitals when she belonged, during high school, to the Society for the Advancement of Judaism’s dance group. Last year she performed with BIODANCE, portraying her mother’s journey to freedom during the Holocaust.
Jeffrey D. Mehr, MA, understands the transcendent power of music. Playing in the moment, he creates music powered by the dancers—music that dancers often feel is a part of them. His first experience with dance was when he was 11—the only boy at the Israeli dance class at Camp Joseph & Betty Harlam, a URJ summer camp near Kresgeville, PA.
Body and Breath. Led by Denise Lippa, June 10, 2-4 pm at Temple Emanu-El.
Using the most basic tool to experience the Divine in each cell of our bodies, our breath bridges that which we can control, with the autonomic genius of the body. We will explore the renewing, creative aspect of breath awareness within, and direct its life-giving force in the areas of our bodies which need that rediscovery of Infinite Power.
Denise Lippa is a physical therapist with multiple alternative wellness trainings, including Alexander Technique, Tai Chi Chuan, Ayurveda, and Pilates. She has practiced for 21 years, with ongoing studies in Craniosacral Therapy, Yoga, and Qi Gong, as well as Kabbalah. Denise is the current president of Temple Emanu-El, and has a deep love of the Hebrew language, Jewish tradition, and spiritual celebration.
