Hebrew School Home Meet Our Staff School Calendar Pictures Resources Registration Form 2011-2012

About our School

Welcome!  At Temple Emanu-El, our children feel a sense of pride in their Hebrew school, experience strong feelings of inclusion in the Reform Jewish community, and are confident in their knowledge of their Jewish heritage.

Our school is organized into small, multi-age classes with fewer thaSchoolHomen eight children in each class. Research shows that children who attend multi-age classrooms often learn more efficiently and are well prepared for the outside world, where people are not separated by age.

Our small classes create for our children an Olam Yehudi Katan, a small Jewish world. Our caring, committed teachers create an extended Jewish family, where each child is valued and appreciated. To know our teachers is to realize that they give of their hearts and of their time to share a love of Judaism with every child.  They strive to encourage curiosity, compassion, and creativity among all of our students.

Our overall curriculum includes the study of holidays, culture, customs, theology and prayer, ethics and values, Hebrew and Torah, Jewish history, and Israel.  Specialists are brought in to augment the regular classes, such as artists, song leaders, cooks, and members of the Rochester community who can speak about their holocaust experience.

Children learn Hebrew reading and writing and obtain an understanding of basic Hebrew including prayers so that they feel comfortable attending services.  They also have the option to choose an elective which may include conversational Hebrew, Jewish cooking, modern midrash stories, Jews in the media, and more.

If you’re looking for a school devoted to inspiring Jewish children to embrace the knowledge and faith of their heritage, this is it.  We are very proud of our school, our students, and our graduates. Our Hebrew school meets Sundays from 9:30 to 12:00. Please contact our principal, Marie Lovenheim, for more information about the Temple Emanu-El Hebrew School.
